Isabel Thomas
Isabel is in their final year of graduate studies at PSU in the SW program, where their major coursework includes school social work, early childhood mental health, and a focus on relationship building through Narrative, Attachment, and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) training.
While their undergraduate degree is in Psychology, prior to starting the graduate program they worked as a preschool teacher and a circus instructor.
Isabel last interned with an amazing school social worker at an alternative PPS school and has over 7 years of experience working with children of all kinds, but especially enjoys working with neurodivergent and queer kids. Through their academic and personal studies Isabel has been drawn to relationship-focused modalities such as Narrative Therapy, and finds that the practical tools gained from DBT can be lifesaving and powerful as well.
Contextual awareness of race, class, and politics are integral to Isabel’s outlook on their relationship with not only clients and therapy, but the overall context and society that we live in– not just as the background of our individual problems but as the very paint in which the art work of our lives are created.
Because of their interest in working with children, Isabel has also been drawn to play therapy, dramatic play, sand tray therapy, art therapy, attachment theory, and other client-centered practices.
Isabel believes that relationship building is the key to successful therapeutic work and that collaboration and partnership with the client on their chosen goals are of utmost importance.
Supervision: During their internship with Connections First, Isabel will practice under the clinical supervision of Beth Weaver, LCSW, who can be reached at beth@connectionsfirst.org.
